What is Ergonomics and why is it important in the workplace?

Over the last few years, there has been an increasing focus on ergonomics in the workplace. This is due in large part to the rising usage of personal computers at work, which can inadvertently create a range of potential health problems. The use of ergonomic theory is one of the major ways in which employers can reduce these issues, but in order to implement them effectively, it’s critical to understand what ergonomics actually entails, and how an office can incorporate it.

What is ergonomics?
Ergonomics is a scientific discipline that aims to learn about human interactions, capabilities, and limitations. Although typically understood to relate to workstations and seating, ergonomics extends far beyond just furniture. It encompasses the entire design and arrangement of workplaces, products, and even systems. With a holistic approach, the application of ergonomic theory can be used to increase the comfort, safety, and efficiency of organisations, making it a much more user-friendly environment for everyone to enjoy.

How can ergonomics be applied to the workplace?
In the context of the workplace, ergonomics is mainly used to improve workspaces and environments to minimise any possibility of injury or harm to the body caused by stressful furniture or processes. Sometimes, just sitting at your desk for hours with poor posture can create major musculoskeletal problems.

Ergonomic systems have also been shown to mitigate this and other injuries caused by repetitive strain. In addition to reducing risk factors and health hazards in the office space, incorporating ergonomics into your office can increase productivity, promote a healthier work life, increase employee morale and employee retention.

By managing ergonomic design early in the office design or fitout process, any building or workspace can ensure that the environment works with and for the workers, as best as possible.
